If you have read any of our previous posts I'm sure this wont come as a huge surprise, but we love all things abandoned, and this series of abandoned mines hit the mark every time we visit them. I will start by saying that if you plan to drive right up to these mines you will need a 4x4 vehicle with decent clearance, but if you don't have those its still very doable, it just requires a hike in. Our journey began driving West from Penticton on highway 3 towards Hedley, shortly before Hedley you will begin to see road signs for Hedley Nickelplate road, take a right and start the slightly rough drive up the hillside. We always love to stop and take in the gorgeous views of the valley, and there are plenty of opportunities
Although the trails to these mines are easy to find, I definitely recommend uploading or taking a screen shot of the map on all trails before you inevitably lose service, even though both trails are easy to see and on your right driving up the hill. The first road is definitely the more rugged of the two, it is narrow and fairly rocky, our stock height jeep managed to make it in but you can always park near the main road and hike in (about 2-3 kilometers, mostly flat) if you aren't confident driving in.
After taking lots of time to explore the lower mine we headed back to the main road to continue up the hill to the upper french mine, eventually reaching a dirt road next to a wooden fence on the right hand side. The road to the upper mine is a much easier drive in than the first, but like the first is a relatively short flat hike in if you would rather, eventually arriving at the upper mine.
We definetly suggest leaving lots of time to explore this beautiful area, happy exploring!! And as always thank you for following us on our adventures!
